Working Mother

Well, I survived my first day back to work since William's birth. I didn't cry today. I got it all done yesterday. It just about broke my heart this morning to walk out the door and leave my baby. I felt better when I got to work and my principal announced my return at morning assembly and all of my students started screaming like mad and I got a billion and one hugs after assembly. They sincerely missed me which I really didn't expect. Then I got home and read Snarfle's blog and almost cried again because I am so jealous that she is getting to stay home with her baby.

I know I'm not the first woman to go back to work when her baby is 8 weeks old. I know that hundreds of thousands of children with working mothers have turned out just fine. I never dreamed I'd be one who would want to stay home with my baby because I am such a social person. But here I sit, looking at my sweet baby knowing that every day I'll wonder what I'm missing. The women I work with assure me that it will get easier. I'm sure they're right but from where I'm sitting it seems awfully difficult to believe.

My sweet husband, in the midst of all of my tears last night offered to take a second job so I could stay home. I won't do that because it is just as important to me that he is around for William as it is that I am. I know that going back to work is what is best for my family. But, it dosen't mean it's easy.

It's (another) BOY!!!

My beautiful niece Felicia had a baby boy this evening. His name is Kaden Lee Martinez. He was 6lbs 14oz and 20 inches long. He is absolutely beautiful (the second most beautiful baby I've ever seen in fact)! CONGRATULATIONS to the new parents Felicia and Rob and the new grandparents my brother Chuck and his sweet wife Ellen. I love you all very much.

Fe~Welcome to motherhood. From what I can tell so far it involves lots of poop, pee, puke, exhaustion and oh, tons of joy. I hope that you and Rob will find as many laughs as sighs of frustration, as many smiles as tears, and many many more days of happiness and joy than sadness. I hope that Rob will be the wonderful partner to you that Ben is to me. I hope that you will find as much wonder looking into Kaden's eyes as I do William's. I am so excited that our sons will get to grow up together. I can't think of anyone I'd rather experience motherhood along side of. I love you.

What's good for the gander isn't always good for the goose.

When Ben and I were ready to go to bed last night, Will was not. We fed him, we changed him, I rocked him, I sang to him, we fed him, we changed him. This was the perpetual cycle for about two hours last night. During this time we tried a few times just laying him down and ignoring him to see if he'd go to sleep. Well, for those Huof you who don't know, Will is still sleeping in our room because we haven't even begun working on his room yet. (That's a whole other story.) So, needless to say, even if you have no intentions of getting up and picking up the crying baby, you still can't sleep while he's crying.

I went to the bathroom and came back and Ben had his shooting earplugs in his ears. I rolled my eyes at him. Gave him my usual response to such things "You suck." And tried to go to sleep. My sweet baby was not cooperating with this idea. So, I got up, changed him, took him into the living room and fed him, sang to him, rocked him. He still wasn't asleep but he was doing the heavy eyed thing so I laid him back down and I laid down. Hubby still had his earplugs in.

Now the baby is finally asleep BUT my wonderful husband, because his hearing is significantly diminished, is snoring so loud the bed is shaking. That's not just a phrase. that's not an exaggeration. THE BED WAS SHAKING!!!!!!

Just about the time I was ready to kick him to make him stop, roll over, something, Will started screaming again and I had to get up again anyway. You'll all be happy to know, sleeping beauty went right on snoring.
